Have you ever heard of Temaki?

Hello our sushi lovers! Time for yet another dose of tasty knowledge. This time we’ll be talking about Temaki.

As you already know, sushi dishes could be grouped into five categories. We have SASHIMI – thin slices of raw fish or shellfish all on their own

NIGIRI –  thin slices of fish or shellfish served over pillows of rice.
MAKI – rolled sushi wrapped in seaweed with rice and filling on the inside (sushi rolls)

URAMAKI – in this case seaweed goes with the toppings on the inside. Rice makes the outer layer here

And the fifth category gets to be our hero for the day – TEMAKI! So let’s find out more about it.

“Fast food” version of sushi

Temaki or temakizushi is, simply put, a sushi where the nori (seaweed) is filled with rice and toppings and then hand-rolled into the shape of a cone.

So what makes it so different from maki or uramaki? Well, when sushi chefs prepare maki or uramaki, the sushi is rolled with the help of a bamboo mat. After it gets rolled chef will slice it into several pieces

Temaki is, however, rolled by hand into a cone shaped piece of undisputed culinary beauty, and is generally eaten with hands! Chopsticks not required!

This is also where Temaki gets its name from. Japanese words for hand (te) and to roll (maki) got combined and Temaki was born.

Because of the facts that it gets hand rolled into the shape of a cone, some claim temaki represents a “fast food” part of the sushi family. Temaki certainly is a non-traditional type of sushi designed to be enjoyed on the go (although you’re more than welcome to spend these autumn days enjoying it in Fukuro:)

It is a type of sushi where everything you need and love gets packed inside a cone made out of nori, delicious and healthy seaweed. It is all inside, the rice, the sauce, avocado, fish….Depending on which Temaki you choose to enjoy. In Fukuro, we have  a broad selection of Temaki which includes:

  • Spicy Tuna Temaki
  • Avocado Salmon Temaki
  • California Temaki with crab mix and cucumber
  • Chicken Katsu Temaki
  • Ebi Temaki with avocado and shrimp and all that great crunchy feel to it

While it’s sometimes not common for temaki to be served alongside the usual “companions”, which are soy sauce, wasabi, and gari (pickled ginger), some actually prefer to put wasabi and soy sauce inside temaki which makes it even more practical to consume.

Regardless of how you decide to treat your temaki, we strongly advise you to roll up your sleeves, call your friends and meet us in Fukuro where the tastiest piece of Japanese cuisine is waiting for you!
